LISTEN: Our starting five: Get to know five Seahawks offensive coordinator candidates

On Day 1 of the Seahawks’ search for a new offensive coordinator, 710 ESPN Seattle’s Danny, Dave and Moore brought you their top five potential candidates – with a twist.

Put together by producer Jessamyn McIntyre, with the help of former Sonics and current Seattle Storm public address announcer Matt Pitman, the candidates were introduced like a 1990s NBA starting lineup (listen above or at this link).

*Cue ‘Y’all Ready for This’*

Candidate No. 1

“Most recently the head coach at the University of Arkansas. He held the same title at Wisconsin, winning a Big Ten Title with none other than your quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks, Russell Wilson. A downhill, run-the-ball type of coach, get on your feet for Bret BIEEEEELEMA!!!!”

Bret Bielema once coached Russell Wilson. He attended Russell Wilson’s wedding. He said Russell Wilson could be president if he put his mind to it. He’s an out-of-the-box choice, though. And, as coaches sometimes need to be disciplinarians, maybe he’s a little too friendly with Russ?

Line: 50-1

Candidate No. 2

“A one-time offensive coordinator under Pete Carroll at the University of Southern California, this former University of Washington head coach is the current offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons. Despite being under contract, his name has surfaced in several reports around the country. Falcons head coach Dan Quinn calls him a zero percent chance. Put your hands together for Steve SARKIIIIISIAN!!!!”

Under Steve Sarkisian, the Falcons offense dropped off significantly this season. However, the team still made the playoffs and even knocked off the NFC West rival Rams (winning him the hearts of Seahawks fans everywhere). Plus, we all love a good homecoming.

Line: 20-1

Candidate No. 3

“A San Francisco native and Utah alum. Most recently offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos. Fired in November. Prior to that he was the head coach of the San Diego Chargers. Let’s hear it for Mike MAAACCCOY!!!!”

Mike McCoy is infamous for a press conference during which he repeated variations of “We’re going to do what’s best for the football team” over and over and over again. When he was OC of the Broncos, the team scored just 18 points a game and managed a whopping 34 turnovers. To be fair, his quarterback at the time was Trevor Siemian.

Line: 7-1

Candidate No. 4

“Hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, this Alabama grad is out as offensive coordinator for the Panthers. Could he be in for your Seahawks? He’s spent time with five different NFL franchises and his work with Cam Newton proves he can handle a mobile quarterback. Is he the one to lead Russell Wilson back to the Super Bowl. Give it up for Mike SHUUUUUULAAH!!!!”

Mike Shula knows what to do with a running quarterback. He was the OC in Carolina during Cam’s MVP season and helped guide the team to a Super Bowl appearance (and subsequent loss).

Line: 5-1

Candidate No. 5

“Once the head coach for Houston and Denver, he led the Broncos to a Super Bowl 50 title. He’s been out for a year because of his health. But he may be open to a return. Is Seattle the opportunity he’s looking for? We’ll find out. Let’s hear it for Gary KUUUUUUBIAK!!!!”

Gary Kubiak is the only coach on this list with a Super Bowl win. Also unlike the other coaches on this list, he wasn’t fired. If the health reasons that caused him to leave the game cease to hold him back, he’s the favorite to end up in Seattle.

Line: 4-1
