For the special pre, pregame show today, producer/engineer Kevin Cremin dug up a gem appropriate for the 4th of July. Ernie Harwell’s “The Game For All America” that he adapted for Mariners baseball as read by Dave Niehaus.
Niehaus read the piece on several occasions but Cremin was not sure when he first broadcasted it. Harwell wrote the original in 1955 and it was first published in The Sporting News. The Niehaus version can be heard here.
New and notes
With the lefty on the hill and because of late night travel, Eric Wedge decided to sit the bottom third of the order tonight. Dustin Ackley, Mike Zunino and Brad Miller were replaced by Endy Chavez, Henry Blanco and Brendan Ryan.
The Mariners will attempt to make a quick getaway tonight as the game is a sellout with fireworks scheduled to take place immediately after. In other words, get out quick or deal with traffic before flying to Ohio.
Michael Morse is scheduled to run the bases tomorrow in Cincinnati. The plan is to send him out on a rehab assignment as soon as he shows no limitations (outside of the ordinary ones) on the bases.
Michael Saunders should make his return Friday.
Bad weather in Cincinnati has forced the Reds to make a pitching change this weekend. Instead of seeing Homer Bailey on Sunday the Mariners will face Bronson Arroyo instead.
