Instant Reaction: 710 ESPN Seattle on Seahawks’ win over Cards

As we do after each Seahawks game, we have polled the voices of 710 ESPN Seattle to get a sneak peak at what the conversation will be on the air Friday about the Seahawks’ 22-16 win over Arizona. Here’s what they have to say:

The NFL needs to do something about Thursday Night Football. Players who are willing to battle through injuries and will themselves to play like Richard Sherman are simply punished because of a typical money grab by the league. Sherman was one of a handful of Seahawks starters lost in this game and you won’t convince me that playing on four days rest isn’t a primary factor. So, did the Seahawks save their season tonight? The win was necessary at all costs. Pretty or not, they needed to win. I put no stock in any style points on a Thursday night game, so no panic about the continued penalties. No stress about the continued issues on the offensive line. Just survival. And now we’ll wait for the second half MVPs to do their job. And yes, I’m talking about the Seattle medical staff!

This was a great win for the Seahawks but it appears to be a very costly one, as well. Richard Sherman, Duane Brown, C.J. Prosise, Kam Chancellor, Sheldon Richardson, Shaq Griffin, and Russell Wilson (I’m sure I forgot somebody) all went to the sidelines or into the tent at some point because of injuries. We’ll see how serious they end up being but thank goodness for a 10-day gap before the next game. Although the Hawks came away with 12 more penalties (some lousy calls in there), they were a better team in all three phases than they were last Sunday against Washington. That is exactly what Seahawk fans needed to see. Better offense, better defense and better special teams. If they are going to be considered a legit Super Bowl contender, they had to have this win. Now they need to figure out how to improve upon this moving forward, possibly without the services of Richard Sherman.

There is such thing as a bad win after all. It happens when you lose your Hall of Fame cornerback for the season as the Seahawks to have with Richard Sherman. It just goes to show you how lucky teams are when they can get through an entire year without major injuries and give themselves a chance at a Super Bowl win. So now the question is, can they do it without Sherman? Probably, but it’s gonna be tough. As for the game, it goes without saying that the penalties are frustrating both from a procedural standpoint and an officiating standpoint. The defense played out of its mind for the most part – Naz Jones, Sheldon Richardson, Kam Chancellor, Shaq Griffin, Bobby Wagner – you could basically run right down the roster. Everyone contributed. And how about that Russell-to-Baldwin circus that led to a Jimmy Graham TD? Definitely one of the most exciting plays of the year. Let’s see Tom Brady do that.

The apparent torn Achilles that may have ended Richard Sherman’s season outweighs any of the positives that came out of Thursday night’s win over Arizona. And I’m guessing there will be continued criticism of Thursday Night Football after so many players were hurt in this game. Then again, it doesn’t matter if the games are being played on Sundays or Thursdays – the Seahawks can still find a way to rack up double-digit penalties. That has happened four weeks in a row now, though some on the defense were highly questionable. If you can get past the penalties and injuries, the Seahawks also came out of it with a 6-3 record, remaining one game behind the Rams in the NFC West. If it weren’t for Sherman’s injury, everyone would be talking about Russell Wilson’s double-360 pass to Doug Baldwin, which is one of the best plays they’ve ever made together.
