After sending backup catcher Welington Castillo to Arizona in the Mark Trumbo trade, the Mariners have recalled Jesus Sucre from Triple-A Tacoma to replace him and designated outfielder Justin Ruggiano for assignment in order to make room on their roster.

The Mariners announced those moves Thursday afternoon, a day after making a six-player trade with the Diamondbacks.

Recalling Sucre was an expected move as he was the team’s backup catcher before it acquired Castillo in May. The only real question was which outfielder the Mariners would part ways with in order to make room. The answer was Ruggiano, who hit .214 with six extra-base hits and three RBIs in 36 games this season.

Seattle had acquired Ruggiano, 33, in an offseason trade with the Cubs in exchange for pitcher Matt Brazis.

Sucre made six starts and went 1 for 15 with the Mariners before his demotion on May 19.
