Kyle Seager will hit a spot lower than his customary No. 5 for the Mariners on Friday night, as he’ll be sixth against Athletics lefty Sean Manaea in the 7:10 game on 710 ESPN Seattle.
Seager is just 1 for 17 over his last five games, the one hit coming in Thursday night’s 7-4 loss to Oakland. Though he hasn’t traditionally struggled against left-handed pitching over his career, he is hitting just .217 with just one home run in 83 at-bats vs. southpaws in 2017 compared to .264 with nine homers in 231 at-bats vs. righties. He is also just 2 for 13 lifetime facing Manaea, though one of the two hits was a homer.
Mariners’ Robinson Cano added to AL All-Star team
Right fielder Mitch Haniger will hit fifth for Seattle on Friday night, while first baseman Danny Valencia will take the No. 2 spot and left fielder Ben Gamel is penciled in to hit eighth.
The Mariners will send a lefty of their own to the mound in James Paxton, who will look to build off a strong performance in his last start Sunday when he held the Angels to one run on two hits and two walks over 6 1/3 innings.
