A Chat with John Schneider’s Mentor: Ron Wolf

Jan 20, 2010, 6:34 PM | Updated: Apr 4, 2011, 7:55 pm

As you well know by now, John Schneider was introduced as the Seahawks new GM today. What you might not know is how much experience a 38 year-old can bring to the table.

Why not ask the man who gave him his first job in the NFL? Ron Wolf joined me today to tell me a bit about this young NFL executive. Bear in mind – Ron Wolf was the man who negotiated the trade for a quarterback you may recognize, Brett Favre and hired Mike Holmgren to coach the Packers. His resume is solid and his opinion of John Schneider counts.

So when he told me that John Schneider’s approach to gettSchnedierJohnFirst ing a job in the league (listen to the story here), was exactly the way he got into the league, I couldn’t help but hope for great things.

“I started by writing letter after letter after letter to all sorts of people involved in the American Football League and the National Football League and eventually, I got a job – so when anybody writes me like that, I respond to it.”

He was not only happy for Schneider when he heard the news – he has a lot of confidence in him to do the job well. “He’s worked very hard – he has an amazing resume for a guy so young. He was in Kansas City, Seattle, Washington and then back in Green Bay. So he’s been around different systems – and I think if you talk to anybody in any of those systems they’ll tell you they were very impressed with John Schneider.”

Ron also discussed his time in Green Bay with Holmgren and why he thought Favre was worth the gamble. You can listen to the entire interview here.

So those of you who were on the Floyd Reese bandwagon – don’t be afraid to trust someone like John Schneider. He might be 38, but he brings 17 years of experience in the NFL to the table. Don’t let the baby face fool you.

What do you think of the new regime? Will Carroll and Schneider rule the NFC West roost? Leave your thoughts below.
