Tuesday’s Show: Joey Cora, Josh Wilson and more

Aug 31, 2010, 6:36 PM | Updated: Apr 4, 2011, 7:55 pm

Another typical breaking news day on The Kevin Calabro Show – here are the highlights:

Jerry Crasnick, ESPN Senior MLB Writer, tweeted earlier today that former Mariner, Joey Cora was a “strong candidate” for the Mariners’ managerial job.

He was kind enough to join us to talk about it today, stating “In the course of calling some people…it was actually someone from outside the Mariners organization, but it looks like he’s a pretty serious candidate for the Mariners job.”

Crasnick also gave us plenty of reasons why the Mariners might want Cora, Joey 1Cora, plus told us why he’d rule out other potential managers like Dusty Baker and Lou Piniella.

In other late and breaking news, Josh Wilson, Seahawks CB was traded to Baltimore for a 2011 conditional pick.

John Clayton, ESPN Senior NFL Writer joined us for his regular Coors Light Cold Hard Facts to break down the trade. Clayton’s reasoning for the trade? “Here’s what I think happened – they shopped Jennings, they shopped Wilson. Wilson is better right now, you get more value for Wilson than you do Jennings.”

Clayton also cited the evolution of the position for the Seahawks as a reason Wilson was traded, stating, “The style of cornerback for Seattle is changing – it’s going into the old Ron Wolf, Al Davis type of model, where they’re wanting somebody a little bit taller, a little more angular – you know, a little more of the Walter Thurmond look than the Kelly Jennings look.”

After the Wilson trade was announced, Seahawks HC, Pete Carroll and GM, John Schneider met with the media to discuss the trade.

Carroll didn’t want to back away from the chance to improve when the team has more needs at other positions. “This is an opportunity for us that came along because of our depth. Josh is a great kid, and we love him and all that, but this is a team that really came after him. It wilsonhappened very quickly, and it was a very competitive situation, so we were able to do something, hopefully, that will be good for him, and good for our team.”

Schneider added that decisions like these aren’t easy, saying, “This is the most difficult weekend of the year for everybody involved – for the coaches, the players…the personnel staff…Josh has been a factor here for several years now and done a great job in the community and everything, very well respected. This is a team that was very aggressive in coming after Josh, they have a strong need…and it has more to do with the way Walter stepped up and the way Tru is playing and some of the younger guys.”
