Former Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan says he didn’t mean to be so negative in a recent column in which he said the Mariners’ 116-win season in 2001 is nothing to celebrate.

McKagan, a Seattle resident and regular contributor to ESPN.com, wrote this week, “without a World Series championship after a season like that, what’s the big deal?”

On Saturday, several members of the 2001 team will be on hand at Safeco Field for a 10th anniversary celebration.

“I’m going Saturday night. I’m going to go celebrate the thing. Maybe I was a little harsh in my column. I wasn’t trying to be harsh,” McKagan told 710 ESPN Seattle’s Kevin Calabro Show on Thursday.

McKagan said Seattle fans, in 2001, started to believe there was a possibility of going to the World Series, but in the end, no one was surprised when the M’s lost to the Yankees in the American League Championship Series.

“We’re Seattle fans, we’re used to rolling with the punches. Thank God we have all the water here and the mountains to take our minds off our teams,” McKagan said.

Sure, the column may be a little “harsh,” but McKagan maintains he’s a loyal Seattle sports fan, even donning several tattoos representing his love for the Seahawks and Mariners.

“I’m a Seattle sports nerd, straight up,” he said.

He promises he’s going to a Sounders game next week and he would celebrate an anniversary for the Seahawks’ 2005 Super Bowl team and the 1996 Sonics team that made the NBA Finals.
