Mariners Breakdown: Multiple heroes emerging when it counts most

Sep 13, 2022, 4:38 PM | Updated: 4:40 pm

The Mariners have already had a few instances of their “most important win of the year” this season, but they may have all been topped Sunday afternoon at T-Mobile Park.

‘Unreal’ comeback makes clear M’s ready for big stageSomething different going on with M’s

Even though the bullpen collapsed and coughed up a 6-2 lead in the ninth inning, allowing the Atlanta Braves to take a 7-6 lead, Seattle hit not one but two solo home runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to steal victory from the jaws of defeat moments after nearly stealing defeat from the jaws of victory.

What made that win all the more important was that it clinched a series win over the defending World Series champions, a perennial contender the Mariners seem to be following the blueprint of, and it put the M’s in position to move into the top wild card spot from the American League while they sat and watched with the day off Monday. The M’s got that spot, too, with Tampa Bay falling to Toronto on Monday night.

As you might expect with the way the Mariners are playing, there are numerous names who could be assigned the title of hero during this crucial stretch run as Seattle looks to end its decades-long postseason drought. Many of those heroes are addressed in the latest M’s breakdown video with Seattle Sports’ Bob Stelton, which you can watch at the top of this post.

In the video, the Wyman and Bob co-host shares his thoughts on:

• Sunday’s comeback and the series win over Atlanta
• how Eugenio Suárez has both met and exceeded his expectations this season
• the otherworldly rookie season of Julio Rodríguez
• whether the lineup is set up to make noise the rest of the way
• impressive runs by young pitchers Logan Gilbert and George Kirby in big games
