The Seahawks continued to hammer on defensive positions of need in the NFL Draft, selecting edge rusher Tyreke Smith from Ohio State at No. 158 overall, their second pick in the fifth round Saturday.

Seahawks Draft Breakdown: Close look at all nine picks

Smith joins Boye Mafe, one of Seattle’s two second-round selections, as rookies that will compete for time in the Seahawks’ pass rush.

A 6-foot-3, 264-pound senior from the Buckeyes, Smith had three sacks, 26 total tackles, two passes defensed and a forced fumble in 2021.

He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.86 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine this spring.

“Elastic, long-limbed edge defender whose unbridled, attacking style brings both highs and lows in every game,” wrote draft analyst Lance Zierlein in his NFL.com profile of Smith.

Zierlein added that Smith will need to fill out, especially the lower half of his frame, to develop into a “functional edge setter.”

Smith was honorable mention All-Big Ten pick in 2020 and second-team all-conference last year.
