The Seahawks will lose Pro Bowl strong safety Jamal Adams to season-ending shoulder surgery, head coach Pete Carroll confirmed Wednesday afternoon.

Salk: Why Seahawks’ offense just got more aggressive

Adams, 26, left Seattle’s 30-23 win Sunday over the San Francisco 49ers with a shoulder injury, finishing the game on the sidelines in street clothes. Carroll ominously didn’t have much of an update on Adams’ status Monday during his weekly show on 710 ESPN Seattle or usual afternoon press conference.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted Wednesday morning that Adams tore his labrum Sunday and “suffered significant shoulder damage.” Carroll then confirmed the report in his regular Wednesday press conference.

Adams’ surgery will be performed on the same shoulder he had surgically repaired last offseason, and the upcoming surgery is “a necessity,” according to Rapoport, who added that Adams is expected to make a full recovery in time for the 2022 season. Rapoport added more details during Wednesday’s edition of NFL Network’s “Good Morning Football,” which you can watch a clip of at this link.

The loss of Adams literally adds injury to insult for the struggling Seahawks, who at 4-8 are staring at the reality that the likely highest draft pick they would have had since 2012 will go to the New York Jets. Seattle sent their first-round picks in both 2021 and 2022, a 2021 third-round pick and safety Bradley McDougald to the Jets for Adams and a 2022 fourth-round pick in July 2020.

In addition to the trade compensation Seattle spent to acquire Adams, it signed him to a four-year, $70 million contract extension with $38 million guaranteed in August.

The results on the field have been mixed. Adams set an NFL single-season record for defensive backs with 9.5 sacks in 2020, doing so despite playing just 12 games, but he struggled in coverage and had no interceptions and just three passes defensed last year. And then this year, Adams has two interceptions and five passes defensed but no sacks.

Injuries have been an issue, as well. In addition to shoulder problems now both years since joining the Seahawks, Adams had to have finger surgery after the 2020 season and has been slowed by groin injuries.

Adams, who was selected sixth overall out of LSU by the Jets in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, is a three-time Pro Bowl selection (2018-20) and one-time All-Pro (2019).
