Just because Geno Smith became the Seahawks’ interim starting quarterback after Russell Wilson suffered a finger injury in Week 5 doesn’t mean Seattle didn’t look around for other QB options.

Pete Carroll Show: Seahawks’ run game, improving D, state of season

It was known that the Seahawks brought former Jaguars starter and Rams backup Blake Bortles in for a visit last week. And on Monday’s edition of The Pete Carroll Show on 710 ESPN Seattle, the Seahawks head coach confirmed they talked to at least one other familiar name.

When asked by Mike Salk if Cam Newton was a consideration for Seattle, Carroll said the team had in fact touched base with the former NFL MVP.

“Just so that you know, we’ve already talked to him,” Carroll said about Newton. “We’re talking to everybody that could help us. To go right back to the base philosophy that we uphold here, we’re going to be competing at every turn here, whoever would be available, so we’re on it.”

And how did those conversations go?

“They were alright,” Carroll responded.

Newton, 32, spent nine seasons with the Carolina Panthers, making three Pro Bowls, earning one All-Pro nod, and winning the MVP for the 2015 season, the same year he led Carolina to a Super Bowl appearance. He spent last season with the New England Patriots but is now a free agent.

On an episode of “Funky Fridays w/ Cam Newton” on YouTube, Newton said teams have shown interest in signing him and that he’s weighing his options.

“I’m just waiting on the right opportunity,” Newton said, according to Sporting News. “You’re probably asking yourself, ‘Don’t nobody want Cam.’ That’s a lie. I’ve been getting offers . . . it has to be right.”

Newton also said he has been vaccinated after initially holding off while competing for the Patriots’ QB job in training camp.
