Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll’s Monday afternoon press conference spent a lot of time on Seattle’s injured players. Some of the news was good about players working their way back from previous injuries, but the injuries stemming from the team’s first loss of the season on Sunday night paint a much more cloudy picture.

How panicked should we be after Seahawks’ discouraging OT loss?

Let’s get to what Carroll had to say.

Seahawks injury updates

• Cornerback Shaquill Griffin, who was taken out of Sunday’s overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals in the second half to undergo concussion protocol, has a confirmed concussion, Carroll said. That’s not all he’s dealing with, however. The 2019 Pro Bowler also has a hamstring issue, according to Carroll, which could further complicate his availability for the Week 8 meeting with the San Francisco 49ers.

• The running back position is suddenly one of great concern for Seattle. Leading rusher Chris Carson was found to have a foot sprain after undergoing an MRI on Monday, which puts him into question to play next Sunday. For a full story on Carson, click here. That’s far from the Seahawks’ only issue in the backfield, unfortunately for them. Travis Homer has a knee bruise, but the real surprise is that Carroll indicated veteran Carlos Hyde, who took over as Seattle’s primary ball carrier after Carson’s injury in Arizona, could also be at risk of missing the 49ers game due to “tightness” in his hamstring. Hyde has already missed two games this year due to injury. With Carson, Homer and Hyde all banged up, that leaves rookie DeeJay Dallas, a fourth-round draft pick, as the only fully healthy halfback on Seattle’s active roster.

• There was one bit of positive news at running back regarding Rashaad Penny, Seattle’s 2018 first-round pick who tore an ACL late last season just as he was appearing to break out. Though Carroll didn’t have a timetable on a possible date of return for Penny, who is on the Physically Unable to Perform list, he sounded impressed by what he’s seen as of late. “Saw him working out today and he looked pretty good,” Carroll said. “He was working out on the grass and he was running hard today, so he’s getting close.”

• Another player making progress is defensive end Rasheem Green, who Carroll said could be near a return. Green, who led Seattle in sacks in 2019, was placed on injured reserve before their Week 3 game due to a stinger that he suffered in the season opener and subsequently prevented him from playing in Week 2. By being placed on IR, Green wasn’t eligible to return to the roster until after Seattle’s bye in Week 6. “Rasheem is ready to come back to practice this week with the opportunity to play next week,” Carroll said.

• Finally, we get to star safety Jamal Adams, who has been the focal point of every injury update since he suffered a groin injury that knocked him out of Seattle’s Week 3 game against the Cowboys. Carroll didn’t have much to report but gave the impression Adams is as close to playing as he has been since the injury occurred. “He really wants to get back but he’s gonna have to show it, that’s he’s capable of doing all the stuff football-wise,” Carroll said. “Because he’s so close to being back, I think it will carry into late in the week.”
