The Seahawks have brought back a familiar face as a potential option to help their struggling defense.

Clayton: Seahawks’ D faces a new test over the next five games

Seattle has signed linebacker Mychal Kendricks to its practice squad. Kendricks is an eight-year NFL veteran, spending six years with Philadelphia and the last two with the Seahawks.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the news Wednesday morning. The Seahawks confirmed the signing in the afternoon, along with the news of safety Damarious Randall’s promotion from the practice squad to the active roster and safety Lano Hill (back) being placed on injured reserve.

The 30-year-old Kendricks has remained a free agent since the end of the 2019 season, when he had three sacks, four passes defensed, an interception and 71 tackles in 14 games (all starts) for Seattle. He played four games in 2018 for the Seahawks before suffering a season-ending knee injury.

The Seahawks are thin at linebacker after losing Bruce Irvin to a season-ending AC tear and with first-round pick Jordyn Brooks having missed the past two games due to a lingering knee injury.

Any time Kendricks’ name comes up, so does his looming sentencing for the two felony charges of insider trading he pleaded guilty to in September 2018. That resulted in a suspension that year by the NFL and his release from the Cleveland Browns, allowing Seattle to pick him up that season. The sentencing has been delayed numerous times, most recently this month to January 31, 2021, according to Field Gulls’ John P. Gilbert.

Kendricks just missed a chance to play against his brother, All-Pro Vikings linebacker Eric Kendricks. Seattle beat Minnesota 27-26 in Week 5.

The addition of Kendricks is the second time in recent weeks the Seahawks have signed a well-known veteran to their practice squad, joining Pro Bowl defensive tackle Damon “Snacks” Harrison, who is using the time on the squad to get into game shape.
