The Seahawks have finally swayed Damon “Snacks” Harrison to come to Seattle.

Tom, Jake & Stacy: Why Seahawks signing Harrison is the right move

The veteran defensive tackle will join the team’s practice squad after a visit Tuesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted early Wednesday morning.

The Seahawks confirmed the signing Wednesday afternoon.

Harrison, 31, is a one-time All-Pro (2016) who spent four seasons with the Jets and 2 1/2 seasons with the Giants and Lions each. He was undrafted out of William Penn University in 2012.

The Seahawks created room for the 6-foot-3, 350-pound Harrison by releasing 2019 seventh-round pick Demarcus Christmas, also a defensive tackle, on Tuesday.

Seattle can use all the help it can get on the defensive side of the ball. Even though the Seahawks are a perfect 4-0 on the season, that’s been in spite of the defense, which has allowed a league-worst 476.8 yards per game. On the one hand, that can be credited to the secondary, as Seattle ranks last with 401 passing yards allowed per game compared to 75.8 rushing yards allowed on average, which is third best in the NFL. But on the other hand, the Seahawks’ struggles to sack opposing quarterbacks have also been a factor, giving opponents more time to complete passes.

Harrison is more of a run-stuffing DT, though he had two sacks and two QB hits for Detroit in 2019 and a career-high 3.5 sacks and eight QB hits in 17 games between the Lions and Giants in 2018. If he gets promoted to Seattle’s active roster, his presence could free up other DTs to play more of a role in the pass rush, specifically Jarran Reed, who had a career-high 10.5 sacks in 2018 but just three in 14 games since.
