Seahawks Football 101: How Bobby Wagner helped seal win on final play

The Seahawks’ Week 2 game with the Patriots went down to the wire and, for the third game in a row against New England, it came down to one last play from the 1-yard line. Like the last two encounters, the defense came out on top and Seattle won 35-30.

By now you’ve probably seen the final play, where Patriots quarterback Cam Newton took the snap out of shotgun and ran to his left. Newton had scored two rushing touchdowns already on essentially the exact same play, and Newton also had a passing TD in the same formation near the end zone. But while looking for his third rushing score and the win, Seahawks backup safety Lano Hill blew up the fullback to help set the edge and 2019 first-round pick L.J. Collier hit Newton’s legs, stopping him well short of the goal line.
But did you realize that one of Seattle’s best players, All-Pro middle linebacker Bobby Wagner, played a key role in sealing the Seahawks’ second win of the season? That’s the topic in Dave Wyman’s second Football 101 video of the 2020 season.
Wyman, a former NFL linebacker who is the Seahawks’ color commentator and hosts 710 ESPN Seattle’s Bob, Dave and Moore, provides a detailed look at how Wagner got Collier and the rest of Seattle’s defensive line in perfect position to stop Newton short of the goal line, as well as how he got through a gap in the offensive line to disrupt the Patriots’ right guard, who was pulling left on the play.
