The Mariners got a look at what’s hopefully in the team’s future for a long time as rookie Evan White, one of the team’s top prospects, hit his first career home run in Monday’s game against the Houston Astros.

Drayer: M’s ‘well aware’ of MLB COVID news, vow to ‘do a better job’

White, the team’s first-round pick in 2017 out of the University of Kentucky, was behind in the count against Astros starter Josh James in the third inning when he got a changeup down in the zone but over the middle of the plate that he barrelled it up to left-center field at Minute Maid Park.

White got his first career hit on opening day, a ninth-inning infield single, and in Seattle’s first win of the season on Sunday, White had his first career RBI. But overall at the plate, he was having some trouble with Houston’s pitching, striking out six times in the Mariners’ first three games of the year, so seeing him square up that 1-2 offering from James had to be a welcome sign for the organization.

The blast was extremely impressive as it went 418 feet, had an apex of 86 feet high and was hit 107 miles per hour off of White’s bat.

White was one of the organization’s best minor leaguers last year, hitting .293 with 18 home runs and 55 RBI in pitcher-friendly Double-A Arkansas. He is Seattle’s No. 4 prospect and is the 55th prospect in all of baseball per MLB Pipeline.

White will look to build off his first big-league homer when the Mariners travel to Anaheim to take on the Angels starting on Tuesday.
