Rookie offensive lineman Garrett Scott’s tenure with the Seahawks is over before it really began.

The sixth-round pick from Marshall was waived Friday after he was diagnosed with a heart condition.

“Garrett’s examination revealed a rare heart condition that will prevent him from any on-field participation in the near future,” Seahawks general manager said, according to a statement from the team. “We think highly of Garrett as a person and as a football player. The team is committed to supporting Garrett in the months to come.”

Scott was waived with the designation of a non-football illness. He did not pass the team’s physical examination prior to the three-day rookie minicamp last weekend, observing all three days of practice.

Scott did, however, sign his rookie contract with the Seahawks on Thursday. He was the first of Seattle’s two sixth-round picks, chosen No. 199 overall.

It’s the first time since 2008 that Seattle drafted a player whose career concluded before he was able to play in at least a preseason game as a Seahawk. Seattle used a sixth-round choice on Tyler Schmitt, a long-snapper from San Diego State who was never cleared in training camp because of a back condition.
