UW Huskies guard Nahziah Carter is earning himself quite the reputation as a spectacular dunk artist, something that was on display Tuesday night.
Carter’s big dunks help No. 25 UW Huskies beat Maine
Carter scored eight points in a 72-53 win over Maine, and while nothing in those 11 words are all that notable, the fact that each of his eight points came on dunks is. Especially considering what the dunks were.
First, we have this one-handed thunder dunk off an alley-oop that recalled some of the great slams Shawn Kemp had in his time with the Sonics.

Not long after, Carter ran ahead on another fast break, took a second lob and threw it down with both hands.

The third dunk was a simple drive into the lane that resulted in an easy 2, but the final dunk – a rim-rattling windmill on a breakaway after he made a steal – was probably the best of the night.

“Specifically with that kind of windmill dunk that he had, I rated it a 5 out of 5 on the DIPAR scale,” said 710 ESPN Seattle’s Stacy Rost. “I know, it’s a big deal.”
Wait – DIPAR scale?
Yes, Stacy was inspired by Carter’s big night to come up with something that is sorely needed in the game of basketball – a five-point rating system for dunks. Ladies and gentlemen, let us introduce you to Stacy’s DIPAR system.
How does it work? Simple. Each letter in DIPAR stands for a different category to rate. Those categories are:
• Difficulty
• Impact
• Power
• Aftershock
• Reaction
“It’s my rubric for grading a dunk,” Rost said. “I encourage you all to adopt it, it’s a very easy to understand system.”
Sure, she could have switched the letters around to spell RAPID instead, but we’ll let that slide. After all, you can’t start a rating with the reaction to it, so that’s a fair choice.
So what are the most important things to point out about the system? How about the impact both teammates and fans can have.
“In a sense, this is an individual dunk moment, but there’s a team aspect to it?” asked Jake Heaps.
Responded Rost: “There’s a team aspect to any dunk that is very underrated. The bench reaction is a big part of that.”
“And the crowd reaction, right?” followed up Heaps. “If you’re a Husky fan, this game’s at home, it’s up to you to make that dunk a 5 out of 5 on this scale.”
Said Rost: “If you’re in the crowd, your biggest impact can be in the aftershock moment, but you’re certainly a part of the reaction.”
