Nine UW Huskies are heading to the NFL Combine later this month. Of the nine players going, who would 710 ESPN Seattle’s Jake Heaps invest in?
Moore: Franchise tag would be right choice with Frank Clark
That was one of the questions answered by the former NCAA and NFL quarterback during Tuesday’s Blue 42 segment on Brock and Salk. Heaps’ answer drew some attention to an ex-Husky that could surprise NFL scouts.
“It’s interesting, when you ask this question it’s like OK, who has more room for movement in my opinion?” Heaps said. “That’s the way I look at this. I think Byron Murphy and Taylor Rapp are kind of locked into their area. They’re going to be late first-round or second-round picks. I think that’s where both of those guys fall into and there’s not really a whole lot of movement they’ll see. They both run well and they have great tape. They’re not going to drop, in my opinion.
“When you look at Ben Burr-Kirven, Myles Gaskin and Kaleb McGary, those are guys who can climb high or they can drop low based off what they do at the combine. And actually, I’ve been able to watch all three of those guys up close training down here at Ford Sports Performance in Bellevue and those guys have put in the work. They’re going to come in at the right weight, they’re going to run well. And I’ll tell you what: Myles Gaskin is going to impress a lot of people. He is a guy who isn’t just a system guy, who isn’t just a college running back. This guy can see the field, but also has pass-catching ability; that’s something that has not been displayed as much and I’ve been able to see it first-hand. He runs great routes, has great hands and great feel. I think Myles Gaskin’s stock is going to rise.
“(And) Kaleb McGary is a freak. He is a freak of nature, and I think there’s going to be some teams that really fall in love with him.”
Heaps also talked about whether he’d ever play with the Alliance of American Football League or the new XFL, and whether there’s anything Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson could be working on this offseason. Listen to the entire Blue 42 segment in the audio clip embedded above.
