Seahawks’ Carroll addresses Tyler Lockett extension, K.J. Wright surgery, rumored QB trade

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll spoke with reporters following Wednesday’s practice to offer a few injury updates ahead of Seattle’s preseason finale against the Oakland Raiders.

Seahawks, Tyler Lockett agree to multi-year contract extension

Arguably the biggest injury heading into the regular season is linebacker K.J. Wright’s knee. Wright underwent arthroscopic surgery Monday for an undisclosed issue.

“Everything went really well… very positive about it,” Carroll said. “It was a cleanup job, an arthroscopic surgery. And hopefully a minimally-invasive approach that will really help him recover in a hurry.”

Asked whether he could offer a timeline for Wright’s return, Carroll said he didn’t yet have that information.

“They talked about a couple weeks,” Carroll said. “It was the most optimistic we could be.”

In the meantime, rookie Shaquem Griffin will take over as Seattle’s starter at weakside linebacker.

“This is really important opportunity for (Griffin),” Carroll said. “Now, he’s played a lot (in the preseason) and he’s made great progress. He played his best game last week (against the Vikings). Even though he had a lot of tackles in the opener, he really played the best he’s played this past weekend.

“We want to see him continue to get better and clean things up and make sure he’s really accountable. He’s a running and hitting guy, we aren’t worried about that. It’s just making sure he’s playing the scheme really well and he’s really precise about all his fits and all that. It’s a bit of a race for him to get there because he’s been more of an outside guy in his career. We’ve adapted (him) to be an inside linebacker on the weakside and we’d like to be able to use his speed and range and all that. So he’s working really hard at it. He’s been a very astute worker, been a really sharp communicator and all that stuff, so a lot of things are positive.”

‘A great Seahawk’

The Seahawks locked up wide receiver and return man Tyler Lockett Wednesday morning with a multi-year contract extension. According to the NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the deal is a three-year contract extension worth $31.8 million with $20 million guaranteed.

“Tyler’s been a great Seahawk, an incredibly productive player,” Carroll said. “You check his numbers, nobody’s done more than he’s done in the years he’s been in the league in terms of total yards. He’s just been such a great competitor for us. This is a great chance to reward him accordingly and make him a Seahawk for a long time.”

The latest on Brett Hundley

Carroll implied Seattle’s reported trade with the Packers for quarterback Brett Hundley has yet to be finalized (the team hasn’t formally announced the deal), but said Hundley would be a promising addition to Seattle’s squad.

“He’s going into I think his fourth year now. He’s played quite a bit, started a bunch of games last year. We’ve been able to see him and really see how he developed, and we liked him coming out of college as well. He’s big, he runs well, he’s got a good arm, he’s got good vision on the field, he’s made a lot of big throws and big plays. He really gives you the thought that he could come in the game and keep it moving. It was just too good of an opportunity to pass up, and hopefully we’ll complete (the trade).”

• CB Byron Maxwell (hip flexor) will not play in Thursday night’s game against the Raiders. Wednesday’s newly-disclosed injuries include LB Erik Walden (hip flexor), RG D.J. Fluker (hamstring) and WR Marcus Johnson (hip pointer). WR Amara Darboh (clavicle) is expected to play Thursday.
• FS Tedric Thompson (stinger/rib injury) could be ready Week 1: “(He’s) doing pretty well, he’s coming back. We’ll see how it goes. We really see him being able to be available for the opener,” Carroll said.
