Mitch Haniger is usually the Mariners’ starting right fielder, but over recent weeks they’ve been using him fairly often in center field. On Thursday in New York, he showed why the M’s have confidence in him as the man in the middle of their outfield.

In Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton’s first plate appearance since hitting a walk-off home run on Wednesday night, he teed off on a James Paxton offering to dead-center. Haniger made sure Stanton didn’t get his second homer in as many at-bats, perfectly timing his jump at the wall to rob the 2017 National League MVP for maybe the best catch this year for the Mariners.
The Yankees still hit a pair of homers off of Paxton in that first inning, neither of which were nearly as well-struck as Stanton’s fly out. Aaron Judge took advantage of the short-porch in right field for a two-run shot, and Miguel Andujar added a homer of his own to right that probably doesn’t get over the wall in any other major league stadium.
Hey, MLB – feel free to put the Yankees in contact with Rick Moranis so he can un-shrink their junior high-sized ball park.
