The Mariners will have yet another new-look lineup when they open a three-game set against the Detroit Tigers on Friday night.
For the second day in a row, second baseman Robinson Cano is out of the lineup, and the Mariners have apparently called up veteran outfielder Endy Chavez from Triple-A Tacoma, as he is penciled in to hit leadoff.
Manager Lloyd McClendon said Cano is out with a “minor hand contusion” and is day-to-day, as reported by Tim Booth of the Associated Press.
The Mariners will need to announce a corresponding move to make room for Chavez on both the 25- and 40-man rosters. Pitcher Brandon Maurer is expected to be moved to the disabled list after leaving Thursday’s loss to the Angels with a back injury.
Chavez, 36, has hit .272 in 37 games for Tacoma this season. In 2013 with the Mariners, he hit .267 with 22 runs scored in 97 games.
Here’s the Mariners’ full lineup for Friday’s game:
Endy Chavez LF
James Jones CF
Michael Saunders RF
Justin Smoak 1B
Kyle Seager 3B
Mike Zunino C
Dustin Ackley DH
Nick Franklin 2B
Brad Miller SS
Hisashi Iwakuma P
