The Mariners finished Monday’s portion of the MLB Draft by taking right-handed pitcher Andrew Moore from Oregon State University with the 72nd overall pick.
Moore, a junior from Eugene, Ore., posted a 7-2 record and 1.91 ERA and three complete games in 16 starts for the Beavers in 2015. He struck out 111 in 122.1 innings pitched.
In 2013 he won the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Award and was named to the Baseball America All-America First Team after going 14-2 with a 1.79 ERA.
“I think the thing that really impressed all of us was his body language and his fastball command,” Mariners director of amateur scouting Tom McNamara said of Moore. “I saw him against University of Washington this year … and what I saw was another guy that could really command his fastball, (and) he was 92 to 94 (miles per hour) for eight innings.”
Moore is one of two right-handed pitchers selected by the Mariners on Monday along with 60th overall pick Nick Neidert.
