The Mariners entered the All-Star break under .500, and with the trade deadline just weeks away, it’s become more and more common to hear Nelson Cruz’s name pop up as a potential trade chip.
The American League’s leader in RBIs is in the midst of a third great season since joining Seattle, and the 37-year-old All-Star designated hitter could net the Mariners some key pieces for the future.
“Bob, Groz and Tom” aren’t buying it, however.
Moore: The Mariners made no sense in the first half of the season
Bob Stelton, Dave Grosby and Tom Wassell had a lively discussion on the possibility of Cruz playing for another team before the month is up, and they all agreed that it’s a long shot that the production he’s providing for the Mariners will be valued as highly by a potential trade partner.
“You’ll never get trade value for him commensurate of what he’s doing for you right now,” Grosby said. “And he’s got one year left on his deal, so it’s not like you’re trading a guy with four or five years left. He just doesn’t have that much value.”
In the video above, you can see the entire segment where the trio discuss the reasons Cruz is so important to the Mariners and what might prevent other teams from offering the right package to Seattle to get him.
