The Mariners placed center fielder Austin Jackson on the 15-day disabled list Monday and called up shortstop Chris Taylor, left-handed reliever Joe Beimel and right-handed reliever Mark Lowe from Triple-A Tacoma.

Jackson, who has hit either leadoff or second for the majority of Seattle’s games this season, suffered a sprained ankle while trying to beat out an infield grounder in the third inning of Sunday’s loss to Houston. He has a .242 batting average with two home runs, 11 runs and four RBIs in 25 games.

The Mariners had three roster spots to fill after Jackson’s injury and the optioning of relievers Tyler Olson and Yoervis Medina to Tacoma on Sunday.

Taylor hit .313 with two homers, 12 runs and six RBIs in 21 games with the Rainiers. He was in a battle for the Mariners’ starting shortstop position in spring training, but he broke a bone in his wrist in March and instead started the year with Tacoma.

Beimel became a free agent after a 2.20 ERA in 56 appearances with the Mariners last season, then agreed to a minor-league deal to return to the franchise on April 2. The 38-year-old veteran didn’t give up a run in 3 2/3 innings of work with the Rainiers.

Lowe, 31, came up with Seattle in 2006 and has nine years of MLB experience with four teams. He returned to the franchise in the offseason and has 1.00 ERA with 11 strikeouts in seven appearances (nine innings) for Tacoma.

To make room for Beimel on the 40-man roster, Seattle designated pitcher Mike Kickham for assignment. Kickham was 0-2 with a 7.29 ERA in five starts for Tacoma. The Mariners have 10 days to trade him, release him or place him on waivers.
