Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto has added another arm to the mix by acquiring right-hander Chris Heston in a trade with the Giants for a player to be named later.
The Mariners announced the move Wednesday night, confirming earlier reports. Seattle designated infielder/outfielder Richie Shaffer for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
“Adding Chris is another move in our continuing effort to build a deep and flexible pitching staff,” Dipoto said in the team’s press release. “His composure and solid feel to pitch has produced positive results at all levels throughout his career.”
Heston went 12-11, with a 3.95 ERA in 31 starts in 2015, notching141 strikeouts in just over 171 innings. The 28-year-old started the 2016 season in the bullpen and eventually optioned to Triple-A, where he struggled with injuries and finished with a 4.54 ERA in 81 1/3 innings.
As 710 ESPN Seattle’ Shannon Drayer writes, Heston looks like a player that could compete for the fifth spot in the rotation and adds more depth.
