Series- Oregon State 15-5

Last Meeting- SU 99-48 January 6, 2010

Scouting Oregon State:

Oregon State is off to a perfect start after taking down UT Arlington 71-56 last Saturday. The surprise CBI champions from two years ago took a step back last season while finishing 14-18. Some important pieces from a year ago have walked away including Seth Tarver who led the Pac-10 in steals and anchored the top of OSU’s feared 1-3-1 zone. Optimism reigns, however, as third year head man Craig Robinson features a team nearly full of his recruits. Oregon State will be young, but extremely athletic. Oregon State will run at times, but Robinson will still look to run his deliberate half court sets. Postseason is the goal for this Beaver ball club.

The Ones to Watch:

Calvin Haynes- 6’3 188 SR F- 12.5 ppg 2 rbds- (Last Season)

Haynes was the OSU leading scorer from last year The Second Team All-Pac-10 performer struggled in the opener going just 2-9 from the field while netting 4 points. He led OSU with 9 points in the meeting last year with SU .

Jared Cunningham- 6’4 182 SO G- 9 ppg 5 rbds

The exciting Sophomore guard will try a shoulder some of the scoring load left from the Tarver brothers. Cunningham averaged 6 points a game last year. He finished 10th in the Pac-10 in steals per game.

Keys to the Game:

1- A Good Start- SU has stumbled badly out of the gates in all 3 contests and they have been unable to recover.
2- Knock down some J’s- SU has not been good from the floor and it will not be easy against the 1-3-1.
3- Bottle-up Haynes- The leading scorer struggled in his first game and SU would like to make it two in a row.

Numbers to Know:

– SU is giving up 92.7 points a game which is 318th in the nation.
– Seattle U outscored Oregon State 58-21 in the second half of the matchup last season.

Seattle U destroyed Oregon State last year in an improbable 99-48 thrashing. There is no question the Beavers will have the outcome in mind when they invade the Key. SU has struggled and it will not be easy turning it around against a Pac-10 team. Tune in 15 minutes before tip on 710 ESPN Seattle and the live blog will be cooking at seattleufan.com.
