The Mariners needed to make a move to get Thursday’s starting pitcher Ariel Miranda on the 25-man roster. It was not their most notable move of the day, though.
Just days after being removed from the closer’s role, Steve Cishek was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left hip labrum tear. The Mariners also optioned reliever Donn Roach to Triple-A Tacoma and recalled Miranda and reliever Blake Parker. Minor-leaguer Mayckol Guaipe was released to create room on the 40-man roster for Parker.
Cishek, 30, is tied for third in the American League with 25 saves and owns a strong 3.40 ERA and 1.07 WHIP, but he’s struggled over the past month. Since July 1, he has a 6.54 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and has allowed a run or more in five of 11 appearances. He joins Tony Zych, Nick Vincent and Nathan Karns as contributors to this year’s bullpen that are on the DL.
Miranda, 27, will be making his Mariners debut Thursday night starting against the Red Sox in a 7:10 game that will be broadcast on 710 ESPN Seattle. He was acquired by the Mariners for Wade Miley from Baltimore in a trade on Sunday. He has appeared in just one career MLB game, allowing three runs on four hits in two innings against the Mariners for the Orioes on July 3.
Parker, 31, is joining Seattle for the first time this season. Signed as a minor-league free agent in the offseason, he last appeared in the majors in 2014 with the Cubs.
Roach, 26, threw two innings of relief in his latest stint with the Mariners, allowing a run on one hit and a hit batter in his lone appearance since being recalled Aug. 1.
Guaipe, 25, had appeared in 26 games since 2015 with the M’s, posting an 0-3 record and 5.29 ERA, but had spent most of the last two seasons playing for Tacoma.
