DETROIT – The Mariners have added pitching depth at the minor league level, acquiring former first-round pick Zach Lee from the Dodgers in exchange for infielder Chris Taylor.
With two starters currently on the disabled list in Felix Hernandez and Wade Miley, plus questions about Taijuan Walker’s status after coming out of a second straight game early due to tendinitis in his right foot near the Achilles tendon, Seattle’s starting pitching depth has been tested. Acquiring Lee, who is 24 and will report to Triple-A Tacoma, should help.
Lee, a right-hander, was selected by the Dodgers with the 28th pick in the 2010 draft. In six minor league seasons he has a record of 52-46. He’s posted a 3.98 ERA with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.00. In 2015 he pitched one game for the Dodgers and was chosen the organization’s minor league pitcher of the year.
Prior to signing with the Dodgers, Lee committed to play both baseball and football (quarterback) at LSU.
With the move the Mariners 40-man roster remains at 40.
