After making a few moves this offseason, one area of need the Seahawks had yet to address was pass rush. That’s apparently no longer the case, as Seattle is bringing back defensive end Benson Mayowa, according to multiple reports from ESPN.

Mayowa’s agent, David Canter, acknowledged the reports on Twitter.

It appears the Seahawks weren’t done after the reported deal with Mayowa, as minutes later ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted that Seattle was also signing fellow defensive end Kerry Hyder Jr. away from the 49ers (story here).

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport tweeted that Mayowa’s contract will be for two years worth a max of $8.8 million, with the first year worth $4.61 million guaranteed.

Mayowa, who turns 30 in August, started his career with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent out of Idaho in 2013. He appeared in just two games as a rookie and then played for three teams from 2014 to 2019, totaling 20 sacks during that span, including seven in 15 games in 2019.

Mayowa returned to the Seahawks last offseason on a one-year deal, and it was a move that worked out well for both sides.

In 13 games, Mayowa recorded six sacks, nine quarterback hits and seven tackles for loss in 2020. He also forced two fumbles, recovered a fumble and deflected three passes.

In 2019, the Seahawks had just 28 sacks, which was tied for the second-fewest in the NFL. Mayowa was one of Seattle’s key defensive acquisitions last offseason, and he finished second on the team in sacks behind only safety Jamal Adams, who had 9.5. The Seahawks finished the year with 46 sacks, which was the seventh-most in the NFL.
