Brock Huard had a positive initial reaction to the news that the 49ers and Chiefs had agreed to a trade sending quarterback Alex Smith to Kansas City.
One reason was the considerable draft compensation San Francisco reportedly will receive in return and how that could set a price for Matt Flynn, the Seahawks’ backup quarterback.
The timing of the deal was another. The fact that the Chiefs struck the deal just days after watching quarterback prospects work out at the scouting combine suggests they weren’t all that impressed with that group, affirming the thought among many draft analysts that this year’s quarterback class lacks top-end talent. That would increase the value of a veteran like Flynn.
“To me, that is good news for the Seahawks,” he said shortly after news of the deal broke.
A conversation with John Clayton minutes later changed Huard’s mind to some degree.
In the video below, he shares his thoughts on the trade from a Seahawks perspective.
