Brandon Marshall, Germain Ifedi and more — what stood out to Brock and Salk in Seahawks’ 3rd preseason game

The Seahawks played their third game of the preseason on Friday, leading for most of the way in Minnesota but ultimately losing 21-20. Brock Huard of 710 ESPN Seattle handled color commentary duties on the TV broadcast of the game, and he and his co-host Mike Salk had plenty to say about what is always the most meaningful game of the preseason.

Brock Huard

• Germain Ifedi played the best half of football he’s ever played, coming the same week the Seahawks moved George Fant to right tackle to compete with him. That’s exactly what competition is supposed to be about.

• Veteran wide receiver Brandon Marshall will make this team. He might miss a game or two and won’t always be a full-go in practice, but he proved Friday against one of the best corners in the game (Minnesota’s Xavier Rhodes) that he can play through contact, something that’s been missing from Seattle’s receiving corps.

• Bobby Wagner and K.J. Wright could be the best leaders this team has had since… maybe ever. They know this is their defense and they’ve taken over the controls.

• Special teams will win a game (maybe two) for the Seahawks this season, and that could be the difference between finishing 7-9 or 9-7. Rookie punter Michael Dickson’s gross and net yardage in the preseason outpaces what anyone in the league did last year. Watching him and Minnesota’s punter, the difference was like varsity vs. J.V.

Mike Salk

• If we start listing the best players in the preseason in order of how they’ve played, how many rookies would be in the top 25 for the Seahawks? Dickson and defensive end Rasheem Green for sure, and maybe tight end Will Dissly. Even with first-round pick Rashaad Penny out due to injury, the future still seems bright.

• I am concerned that this team isn’t going to take the ball away enough. It has been a problem for a few years and I haven’t seen much evidence that is going to change this year. Where are those turnovers going to come from?

• I like Alex McGough and I would take him over Austin Davis as the backup quarterback. He needs to learn the offense but he is pretty accurate and athletic. I get the sense his decision-making will be better as he gets more comfortable and learns the offense more.

• If wide receiver David Moore and running back Chris Carson, both picked in the seventh round in 2017, end up being impact players, will that make that the greatest seventh round ever for a team?
