The Mariners enter Tuesday with a 57-34 record, which has them in position to end a 17-year playoff drought. But just because the Mariners are winning doesn’t mean they’re not about to make some changes.

If Mariners want to lessen burden on Diaz, offense may be the answer

Baseball Prospectus writer Nathan Bishop joined John Clayton on 710 ESPN Seattle Tuesday and said he believes general manager Jerry Dipoto will be plenty busy before the July 31 trade deadline.

“I expect this to be as active a trade deadline as the Mariners have had in years,” Bishop said. “I think you can make a case for a starting pitcher coming on, it’s probably going to be the most difficult thing and the most sought-after commodity. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jerry go get a relief pitcher, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him try to get another outfielder. He’s a pretty creative guy and I give him a lot of credit for that. He tends to not focus in on one thing… so he’ll cast a wide net.

“And if there’s one thing Jerry Dipoto has shown in his time, it’s that he can and will make trades.”

You can listen to the full interview with Bishop, including why he thinks having players like Ryon Healy affords Seattle more flexibility at the deadline, in this podcast.
