The Seattle Mariners announced Wednesday that Safeco Field will feature expanded protective netting starting with the 2018 season.

The netting will reach the outside ends of each dugout and be 11 feet above field level. It will be attached to the field edge of the dugout roofs.

Installation of the project, which the Mariners consulted with MLB and global architectural firm HOK on the plans, will begin in March.

“Fan safety and ballpark experience are always top of mind for us,” said Kevin Mather, Seattle Mariners President, in a press release. “We believe we have a design that improves safety and uses the latest materials and industry standards to minimize the impact on sightlines.”

The Mariners previously expanded the netting at Safeco Field prior to the 2016 season to extend 70 feet on either side of home plate. The netting will protect Sections 122 through 138. Previously it extended from Sections 126 to 134.
