Byron Maxwell is reportedly rejoining the Seahawks to add depth at cornerback after Richard Sherman’s season-ending Achilles injury, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Maxwell, 29, was reported to have a workout with the Seahawks set up after Sherman ruptured his Achilles last Thursday in a win over Arizona. He was cut last month by the Miami Dolphins.

Carroll: Seahawks ‘fortunate’ to have Jeremy Lane after Sherman injury

A sixth-round pick of Seattle in the 2011 NFL Draft, Maxwell played four seasons with the Seahawks, making four interceptions in 2013 and working his way up to a starting job in 2014. He parlayed that into a lucrative deal with Philadelphia, but he lasted just one season with the Eagles and landed in Miami in 2016. He started all 15 games he played over the past two seasons with the Dolphins.

Maxwell is still being paid a base salary of $8.5 million by the Dolphins for 2017, meaning Seattle could add him on the cheap.

With Jeremy Lane in line to take Sherman’s starting spot, Maxwell would give Seattle a capable backup with familiarity to the team’s system.
