Four Seahawks will miss this Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams: defensive end Cliff Avril, defensive tackle/defensive end Quinton Jefferson, running back C.J. Prosise and cornerback Neiko Thorpe.

Avril (neck) was ruled out earlier this week and isn’t likely to return to action anytime soon. A surprise on the list was Jefferson, who broke his hand in practice Wednesday. The injury will require surgery and will keep him sidelined for about four weeks. Jefferson was re-signed by Seattle earlier this week to help bolster the defensive line following the loss of Avril. The Seahawks now enter Sunday’s game with just seven healthy defensive lineman.
The team Saturday signed defensive end Branden Jackson from the practice squad.
Carroll said Prosise (ankle) was running this week and was listed as doubtful Friday, though he’s since been downgraded to out. J.D. McKissic will continue to start as the team’s third-down back in his place.
Also out is Lane (ankle), whose starting duties will likely be handled by Shaquill Griffin.
A pleasant surprise for the Seahawks is the progress of left tackle Rees Odhiambo, who earlier this week required an overnight hospital stay after suffering a bruised sternum.
“He had a good Wednesday and a good Friday. We gave him a break on Thursday to make sure he didn’t overdo it, but he looks like he’s ready to go,” said Carroll, noting the staff was somewhat surprised by his quick turnaround.
In addition to this week’s injury updates, Carroll filled the media in on players facing long-term recoveries. On that list is rookie defensive tackle Malik McDowell, who suffered a concussion in a vehicular incident this past offseason. The team has not ruled out the possibility of McDowell playing this year.
“You know, we don’t know that yet. He’s got some stuff coming up in the next couple weeks, I think it’s in two weeks, that he’ll get kind of reassessed and all that… there’s been some conversation, different camps kind of, about where he is and how he’s doing. So the checkups are really important. And we’ll just see. We have not ruled that thought out, that he could come back.”
Defensive lineman Dion Jordan and cornerback DeShawn Shead, both missing time with knee injuries, are also making progress.
“(Dion) had a fantastic workout today,” Carroll said. “I was watching him over the top of practice today, he was out here busting it. He’s with the strength and conditioning guys now and he’s really pushing it not just to get in shape, but to get ready to go. Is it one week, two weeks, three weeks, we don’t know that yet. But he’s going to get close to the opportunity to come back… and that would be a tremendous boost for us.”
