The contusion on James Paxton’s elbow has proven to be severe enough to warrant a stint on the disabled list.
Paxton was placed on the the 15-day DL on Tuesday afternoon, and Cody Martin has been recalled from Triple-A Tacoma. Martin could slide into Wednesday’s start for Seattle, though the team still has yet to announce their probable starter for that game.
Paxton’s DL move is retroactive to Aug. 8, meaning he would be eligible to be activated on Aug. 23. He last pitched on Aug. 7, going 8 1/3 innings before a batted ball was rocketed off his left elbow. Though initial reports were positive about the contusion, he has experienced stiffness in recent days, pushing back and eventually eliminating a scheduled start during the current Mariners series against the Angels.
The 27-year-old southpaw is 4-5 with a 3.53 ERA in 13 starts this season for the Mariners after being called up from Triple-A in June. Over his last four starts, he has pitched at least seven innings while allowing one earned run or less three times.
Martin, 26, will be in uniform and available Tuesday to begin his third stint with Seattle this year. He has allowed three runs in 10 innings (2.70 ERA) over five relief appearances for the Mariners. He has been used primarily as a starter in Tacoma, going 9-7 with a 3.93 ERA. He ranks among the Pacific Coast League leaders in strikeouts (99, tied for eighth) and wins (nine, tied for 11th).
