Seahawks, WR Terrell Owens agree to deal

Terrell Owens — one of the NFL’s most prolific and controversial wide receivers — has agreed to terms with Seattle, the team announced Monday night. According to FOXSports.com’s Jay Glazer, who first reported the agreement, it is a one-year deal.

Owens had a workout with the Seahawks earlier Monday, and according to ESPN.com’s Mike Sando he ran the 40-yard dash in under 4.5 seconds, an impressive time considering Owens is 38 and hasn’t played in the NFL since 2010.
Owens was out of the NFL in 2011 after having surgery to repair a torn ACL. Earlier this year, he had 35 catches for 420 yards and 10 touchdowns in eight games for the Allen Wranglers of the Indoor Football League, who released Owens in May. With the Bengals in 2010, Owens caught 72 passes for 983 yards and nine touchdowns.
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll has repeatedly shown a willingness to give players a chance to rejuvenate their careers in Seattle. Antonio Bryant, who hasn’t played since 2009, was attempting a comeback with the Seahawks before he was cut this weekend. Braylon Edwards is in camp trying to rebound from the worst season of his career. Past examples include Leon Washington and Mike Williams.
Owens is the latest, and he’s by far the most accomplished. His 15,934 receiving yards and 158 receiving touchdowns are both second in NFL history behind Jerry Rice, the all-time leader in both categories. Owens has made six Pro Bowls during his 15 seasons.
But he also carries a reputation as a bad teammate and a malcontent, labels given to Owens thanks to numerous on- and off-field incidents during his stints with the 49ers, Eagles and Cowboys. His two most recent stops, Buffalo in 2009 and Cincinnati in 2010, seemed to be relatively incident-free.
The addition of Owens gives the Seahawks more insurance for their No. 1 receiver, Sidney Rice, who is being held out of contact during training camp in an attempt to preserve his health after having offseason surgery on each each shoulder.
Owens could be on the field Tuesday when the Seahawks resume practice following a day off Monday.
