Report: Seahawks disciplined for violating offseason no-contact rules

Aug 26, 2014, 3:37 PM | Updated: 4:16 pm

The Seahawks have been fined and docked two future practices by the NFL for a violation of the league’s offseason no-contact rules, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen and others are reporting.

According to Mortensen’s report, coach Pete Carroll and the team were collectively fined more than $300,000 and the Seahawks will lose two minicamp practices next offseason.

It’s unclear when exactly the infraction(s) took place. Mortensen’s report states that the discipline stems from “a June 16 practice” that was deemed to have included a violation of the league’s collective bargaining agreement, which bans live contact during that portion of the offseason. However, the Seahawks had finished organized team activities the week prior and did not have their first minicamp practice until June 17.

According to Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports 1, fights in minicamp caught the attention of the players’ union. Among the noteworthy fights this offseason came on June 18, when cornerback Richard Sherman and receiver Phil Bates went at it.

“League looked at tape of entire practice and deemed Seahawks coaches were encouraging too much contact,” Garafolo tweeted.

In 2012, the Seahawks forfeited two minicamp practices because of a similar violation.
