Franklin Gutierrez will give the 2013 season one more try, while Aaron Harang will likely be looking for a new team.

The Mariners activated outfielder Gutierrez from the disabled list Monday, and designated starting pitcher Harang for assignment to make room on the roster.

Gutierrez, 30, has been plagued with injuries all season, hitting the DL twice with a strained right hamstring and making four rehab trips to Tacoma. In 18 MLB games, he has a .267 average (16 for 60) with four doubles, five home runs, 11 RBIs, two walks and 15 strikeouts. In 49 Triple-A games, he’s .211 (41 for 194) with 16 doubles, three home runs, 25 RBIs, 15 walks and 60 strikeouts.

The Mariners have 10 days to trade, release or outright the contract of the 35-year-old Harang. He has a 5-11 record and 5.76 ERA in 22 starts for Seattle. His last outing was Sunday’s 7-1 loss to the Angels in which he yielded seven earned runs on nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.

The Mariners will need to move a pitcher from the bullpen into Harang’s spot in the rotation. Brandon Maurer appears to be the ideal candidate – the rookie has made 10 starts in his 16 appearances at the MLB level this season.
