The Los Angeles Rams have parted ways with running back Todd Gurley, who has been one of the better backs in the league since he entered the league in 2015. Shortly after his release was official, the Seahawks were listed as a potential destination for the two-time All Pro.

Clayton: How has patience paid off for the Seahawks in free agency?

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport (via NBCSportsNorthwest.com’s Joe Fann) said Seattle could be a suitor for Gurley.

“It sounds like he wants a chance to prove he’s still got it,” Rapoport said.

Gurley was a Pro Bowler his rookie season, compiling over 1,100 rushing yards, and took off when head coach Sean McVay joined the fray in 2017. In 2017, Gurley had over 2,000 all-purpose yards and 19 touchdowns. He followed that up by compiling over 1,800 all-purpose yards in 2018 and 21 touchdowns.

But he trailed off at the end of that year with a knee injury, and he had a disappointing season by hist standards with 857 rushing yards, but he still had 14 total touchdowns.

His injury history with his knees, which one of them is reportedly arthritic, as well as his hefty contract made him a cap casualty for the Rams, who had a tough cap situation and don’t have a first-round pick until 2022.

He signed a four-year deal worth $57.5 million that kicked in in 2019 and he had a cap hit of $17.25 million if he was still on the Rams’ roster and had a $10.5 million deal bonus that would have kicked in soon per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Seahawks are expected to add to their running back room at some point this offseason, as they have just three running backs on their roster currently, and their two lead backs are both coming off season-ending injuries.

Starter Chris Carson, who had his second 1,000-yard season in 2019, fractured his hip in Week 16 and Rashaad Penny, a 2018 first-round pick, tore his ACL in Week 14. Rookie Travis Homer and Marshawn Lynch, who Seattle signed ahead of Week 17, took over the backfield the rest of the season, but neither were able to do too much in terms of yards gained.

Carson is expected to be ready to start 2020, but Penny’s recovery could push his debut back. He’s expected to start training camp on the physically unable to perform list (PUP).

Gurley could be an intriguing deal for Seattle as he’ll reportedly be making $7 million this year due to his previous contract, so if he’s looking to sign a one-year “prove it” deal, he could potentially be signed at a low price. Plus, the Seahawks offer Gurley a chance that most teams can’t: the chance to play his old team, the Rams, twice in 2020.

Something else that could make Gurley interesting for Seattle is he was reportedly at the top of Seattle’s draft board in 2015 according to Seattle Times Seahawks reporter Bob Condotta.

It’s been known that the Seahawks call many big names in free agency, and they regularly call teams about trades, so reaching out to Gurley certainly isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
