LISTEN:

Russell Wilson and the Seahawks have agreed to a four-year extension worth $87.6 million hours before a self-imposed deadline.

“It’s pretty remarkable what deadlines will do,” Danny O’Neil told KIRO Radio. “We saw it a couple of weeks ago with a couple of receivers, and now, on the eve of the first practice … the basic agreement has been reached.

“It’s great news for Seattle fans and it’s certainly going to help Russell Wilson’s bank account in the near term.”

Danny says the deal definitely means pressure on the team’s salary cap, especially with a $31 million signing bonus.

“It’s significantly more than the Seahawks had initially proposed and I think that that would have been the major concession they would have made. And that would probably have some trickle-down effect. Maybe it’s after they get an agreement with Bobby Wagner, which is what will be next in line.”

Bobby Wagner tweeted Friday morning: “Can’t keep everyone”

Danny says there may be a couple of veterans or guys on the defensive line that will be asked to take pay cuts or released outright. Despite that, it’s great news for Seattle.

“It’s the biggest deal that the Seahawks have ever given to a player,” Danny said.

Some critics think $87.6 million is just too much, but Danny says the reality is the NFL generates a huge amount of money and the players probably don’t get as much of that as they deserve.

“He’s definitely worth it … he’s the perfect fit for how their offense currently functions,” he said.

Whether or not you think he’s one of the nation’s best quarterbacks, Danny argues he’s the best for this team. If you’re a Seahawks fan, you shouldn’t feel anything but relief that this impasse is behind us.
