6/3: Thoughts on Mariners’ roster move

Jun 3, 2011, 10:54 AM

Marc W of USSMariner.com shares his thoughts on the Mariners’ decision to option Michael Saunders to Triple-A and replace him OF Greg Halman. Marc shares a similar opinion as that of Shannon Drayer, that the move is more about Saunders than anything else. Jeff Sullivan of LookoutLanding.com weighs in here.

–Mike Sando of ESPN.com takes a look at stop rates among NFC West defenders. Sando’s explanation of a stop rate is this: “Stop rates reflect what percentage of a player’s statistics produce successful outcomes against running plays. The stat defines successful outcomes as those when the opposing runner fails to gain certain percentages of the yards required for first downs. The percentage is 45 on first-down runs, 60 on second-down runs and 100 on third- or fourth-down runs.”

–Adam Schein of FOXSports.com has the Seahawks at No. 12 in his annual NFL organization rankings.

Schein: “The facilities are state of the art. The home-field advantage with the “12th man” is significant. Coach Pete Carroll and GM John Schneider inherited a total mess. They were super-active last season, bringing in different combinations of players, leading to a street free-agent gem like Mike Williams. Hiring Tom Cable to coach the offensive line was a great move. Seattle, finally, has a good structure in place.”
