The Seahawks running game struggled in the first two preseason games. The Hawks managed 92 yards rushing against San Diego and only 72 against Denver. NFL insider John Clayton thinks the Denver game specifically concerned the team enough to explore other options at running back. Julius Jones was out with a mild injury, leaving T.J. Duckett and Justin Forsett to handle the majority of the carries. No one liked the idea of having Duckett as the primary back, and that thought according to Clayton sent “a panic through the system”.

Clayton was surprised that Seattle would go with Edgerrin James but the signing makes more sense because James is a player that you can count on to start for a few games during the season if injuries happen. Looking at some of the other backs on the market, there just weren’t any better options available. Running backs like Shaun Alexander, Kenny Watson, Mike Anderson, Tatum Bell, Michael Pittman, and Ahman Green are available but each has a flaw, whether it be skill or age. In the end Clayton viewed the move as just OK, but it is an upgrade over Duckett.
