Blue 88: Shockey make no sense for Seahawks

Former Pro Bowl tight end Jeremy Shockey was cut by the Saints on Tuesday, becoming the latest marquee player to be looking for a new team.
When the Colts released safety Bob Sanders last week, Brock Huard said in Blue 88 that Sanders’ age and injury concerns are reasons why the Seahawks should not be interested. For those same reasons, Brock thinks it wouldn’t make sense for the Seahawks to sign Shockey, who’s 30 years old and has missed 10 regular-season games over the last three years:
“He’s going to be 31 here soon. He’s played nine years. Very similar conversation to Bob Sanders. They’re at a stage in their career where they will be a right fit for somebody, but not here. A sports hernia, toe injuries, rib and groin injuries, concussions – he’s been beat up. He’s missed significant time over the last three seasons.
“A team with a specific need and a hole to fill and has the luxury to take on a veteran like that, sure enough he’s going to find a home somewhere and maybe even play a significant role. When you’re dealing with the Hawks, who are building through youth and young people and building their foundation, I don’t see Jeremy Shockey in the plans.”
