Bumpus: Do Seahawks need Metcalf and Lockett to repeat ‘special’ performances?

The Seahawks were able to snap a two-game losing streak last Sunday against the L.A. Rams and star receivers DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett were big reasons why.

That duo combined for 17 catches 255 yards with Lockett outgaining Metcalf by just a single yard (128 to 127).
Both receivers caught touchdown passes from Geno Smith, with Metcalf’s score giving the Seahawks the lead with under a minute left in the game.

This Sunday, the Seahawks return home and host the 4-8 Carolina Panthers, who have won two of their last three games and have a better defense than you might think given their poor record.

So do the Seahawks need Metcalf and Lockett to both have huge games again on Sunday? Former NFL receiver Michael Bumpus broke it down during Thursday’s Bump and Stacy on Seattle Sports 710 AM.
“Last week they were special,” Bumpus said. ” … It was the first time two different Seahawks receivers had 100 receiving yards in a game since (those two) did it back in Week 3 of the 2020 season. So that’s something that you do not see very often in this offense.”
This week, Metcalf and Lockett have a tough task with Carolina’s starting cornerbacks.
“You’ve got the No. 9 eight overall pick in the 2021 draft Jaycee Horn from South Carolina … and C.J. Henderson is going to be the other corner. He was the No. 9 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, and he has one interception on the year,” Bumpus said. “Now I just say that because guys are picked early for reasons. These guys are going to be super talented.”
“Now will that be able to go for over 120?” Bumpus later asked. “I don’t think they’re going to, but I don’t think they’re going to need to.”
Ultimately, just one of Metcalf and Lockett need to have a big game for the offense to operate effectively, Bumpus said.
“I think if one of these guys goes off and pushes it over 100, the other guy can be the more possession receiver. You nix in a little bit of the run game and you’ll be good to go,” he said. “They are capable of doing it, but I don’t think it’s a necessity this week. You need one of these guys to be the main attraction and you need the other guy to be the opener … Someone’s the opener, someone’s gonna be the main attraction. But I don’t think it’s necessary (both have big games) this week.”
