After a 4-0 start. the UW Huskies dropped back-to-back games against UCLA and Arizona State before getting back in the win column last weekend against Arizona.

Next up for the Huskies? Another Pac-12 showdown with Cal and head coach Justin Wilcox, a former UW defensive coordinator.

It’s been a fun season overall for UW, especially on the offensive side of the football with quarterback Michael Penix Jr. But what’s the next step for the UW Huskies?

Former NFL and UW Huskies quarterback Brock Huard discussed that during Thursday’s Brock and Salk on Seattle Sports 710 AM.

“They’ve gotta take it on the road,” he said.

The Huskies are 5-0 at home this season, but both of their losses this year have come on the road at UCLA and at Arizona State. This week’s matchup with Cal is on the road as well.

Huard is on the FOX call for UCLA and Oregon this weekend, and was watching film of the UW Huskies’ loss to the Bruins a few weeks ago.

“They just didn’t have the same kind of edge. Guys played hard, it wasn’t an effort thing, but it was just an edge to the details,” he said. “It’s just the little things when you go on the road – and it doesn’t matter where you can ask Cal, who went to the worst team in America to Colorado in last this last weekend.”

Additionally, Huard said, Wilcox has always played the Huskies tough. His teams are 2-2 vs UW, and outside of the matchup in his first year at Cal, the games have been very close.

“The Huskies will go down to Cal and they’re going to have to handle their business in a place where they’ve not particularly been dominant against Justin Wilcox. He’s always played them very, very tough. And it’s going to be a hard fought four quarter game,” he said. “… It’s hard to win in the NFL on the road. It’s maybe even harder for college kids … especially in venues that rock a little bit. Cal won’t be rocking, so it will be incumbent upon them for the first time this year to go get a road win. And it will be the attention to detail to get it done.”
