A day after announcing their initial 53-man roster, the Seahawks have made a number of other moves impacting both the active roster as well as the team’s practice squad.

Rost on Seahawks: A surprising roster cut sparks debate

The Seahawks claimed two players off waivers on Tuesday in defensive end Darryl Johnson and cornerback Isaiah Dunn. Johnson was waived by the Carolina Panthers while Dunn was waived by the New York Jets.

Johnson was a seventh-round pick of the Buffalo Bills in 2019 and he has two career sacks. Dunn, meanwhile, was an undrafted free agent signing of the Jets last year and appeared in 12 games (one start), recording eight tackles and breaking up two passes.

To make room for Johnson and Dunn on the 53-man roster, undrafted rookie linebacker Joshua Onujiogu was waived and cornerback John Reid was placed on injured reserve. If Onujiogu clears waivers, he can sign to the Seahawks’ practice squad. Reid, meanwhile, must miss at least the first four games of Seattle’s season.

As for the practice squad, the Seahawks have signed 12 players Wednesday afternoon. Those players are:

• Receiver Bo Melton
• Receiver Cade Johnson
• Receiver J.J. Arcega-Whiteside
• Offensive tackle Greg Eiland
• Offensive tackle Liam Ryan
• Linebacker Vi Jones
• Linebacker Aaron Donkor
• Linebacker Tanner Muse
• Tight end Tyler Mabry
• Safety Scott Nelson
• Running back Darwin Thompson
• Cornerback Quandre Mosely

Roster Notes

• The Seahawks will reportedly re-sign nickel cornerback Justin Coleman to the 53-man roster. The team must clear one more roster spot for Coleman, and a likely outcome is placing 2019 first-round defensive lineman L.J. Collier on injured reserve to start the year. Collier has been dealing with an elbow injury.

• NFL practice squads allow for 16 players, but even though the Seahawks have signed 12 to that roster, they actually have five openings. Donkor does not count towards the limit as he’s part of the league’s International Player Pathway Program.

• The Seahawks will reportedly be signing quarterback Sean Mannion to the practice squad. He was with Seattle last offseason and actually made the team’s initial 53-man roster, but was let go shortly before the season. The Seahawks currently have just two quarterbacks in the building (starter Geno Smith and backup Drew Lock) after waiving Jacob Eason on Wednesday. Eason reportedly will sign with the Panthers’ practice squad.

• Of the 12 signed to the practice squad, all but one – Mosely – were waived by the Seahawks recently, with 10 being waived on Tuesday. No player Seattle waived was claimed by another team, so they were all eligible for the Hawks’ practice squad.

• The biggest names on the list are at the receiver position. Melton was one of two Seattle seventh-round picks this year and was the lone member of the Seahawks’ nine-man draft class to be waived. Arcega-Whiteside is a 2019 second-round pick who Seattle acquired earlier this month from Philadelphia in exchange for cornerback Ugo Amadi.
