Seahawks keep Penny and Collier at trade deadline, make no additions

The last two years, the Seahawks made some pretty big additions at the trade deadline to strengthen their defense. That wasn’t the case in 2021.

Clayton: Why Seahawks are trending up going into their bye week

After adding Pro Bowl safety Quandre Diggs in 2019 and defensive end Carlos Dunlap in 2020, the Seahawks were, like most of the other teams in the NFL, quiet at the deadline, not making any additions or subtractions.

The Seahawks once again are among the worst teams in the NFL when it comes to sacking opposing quarterbacks, so it was thought that they may try and add an outside face to help boost the pass rush like they did last year when they acquired Dunlap from the Bengals for a seventh-round pick and backup center B.J. Finney.

That didn’t happen, though, and the Seahawks will work with what they’ve got the rest of the way as far as the pass rush goes, and really the roster as a whole.

At 3-5, the Seahawks weren’t considered “sellers” in part because they still could get on a run and make the playoffs as there are seven teams in each conference that make the postseason, but they reportedly had two former early picks on the trading block.

Those players were 2018 first-round running back Rashaad Penny and 2019 first-round defensive end L.J. Collier.

Collier has been a rumored trade chip for a while now as, through eight games, he’s been a healthy scratch six times. This comes after starting every game for the Seahawks a year ago, so it’s clear he’s fallen out of favor with Seattle’s defensive line rotation.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on Tuesday that the Seahawks were not shopping Collier and that they “still see value” in him.

Fowler later joined 710 ESPN Seattle’s Jake and Stacy and said that there was a chance that Penny could be moved before the deadline hit, but that running back supply was far greater than running back demand in terms of trades.

Penny has played in just three games this year in his contract year and has struggled to get going, tallying just 24 yards on 15 carries this year.

With the trade deadline officially in the rearview mirror, the Seahawks now head into their Week 9 bye before returning to action in Week 10 against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.

Also worth noting is that because the deadline has passed, any players released across the league will be subject to waivers.
